JON Williams, Mersea Island RFC's points scoring machine smashed through a personal and club milestone on Saturday when he racked up his 2,000th league and cup point for the club.

Since joining the Islanders at the start of the 1995/96 season, the proud Welshman has scored a current career total of 94 tries, 211 penalties, 436 conversions and 11 drop-goals, and has enjoyed winning promotion six times with the North East Essex Club.

On achieving the milestone at Norwich on Saturday, a delighted Williams said: "It has been an absolute pleasure to play for such a great rugby club and play alongside such a great bunch of players.

"It's a simple cliché but - you are only as good as the players around you, and at the end of the day the Mersea boys have always got me in all those positions to kick my goals.

"Despite suffering with a hernia injury for the past two seasons, I have been very fortunate to remain fit and relatively injury free, with my two very active sons Tom and Harry always keeping me going, and nothing gives me more pleasure when they run on the pitch with my kicking tee and cheer as I slot over a successful goal for Mersea."
