A REFURBISHED monument to American airmen based in north Essex during the Second World War is to be unveiled.

A ceremony on Saturday morning will rededicate the monument at RAF Boxted, near Langham, which was home to units of the United States Army Air Force between 1942 and 1945.

Weather permitting, a Mustang fighter, one of the aircraft which flew missions from the airfield, will again take to the skies over Langham for a flypast.

Dignitaries from the US Embassy, RAF and Colchester Garrison will be in attendance, with an honour guard provided by USAF personnel based at RAF Mildenhall, in Suffolk.

The monument was put up in 1992, and Langham Parish Council has refurbished it by recladding the plinth in black marble, building a ceremonial wall around it showing the badges of the units based there, and fitting seats for visitors.

An exhibition about the village at war will be at Langham community centre from 2pm to 5pm.

lThe ceremony starts at 11.30am, with the flypast scheduled for noon.
