MERSEA ISLAND 3 BASILDON 43
London League division three north east
While the scoreline does not reflect the closeness of a very competitive game played in a great spirit Mersea Island slumped to a heavy home defeat by London League division three north east leaders Basildon.
Mersea competed well for long periods, but for all their hard work and first half endeavour, their only reward was an early Jon Williams penalty.
League leaders Basildon justified their top position with a ruthless, well-drilled display and the South Essex team took all of their opportunities very well. Nevertheless, despite the one sidedness of the final scoreline, Mersea’s players remained upbeat at the final whistle.
The Islanders knew that a better side had won on the day but also that they had all competed well in a excellent game of rugby.
Flankers Andy Windridge and Andy Moncur and number eight Dave Bredin were outstanding, with props Danny Blacklock and Dave Murrell featuring prominantly throughout the match.
Mersea’s first-team are without a fixture tomorrow but will be turning their attentions to the seconds – the Mersea Rhinos – to help boost their squad and ensure a fixture is finally fulfilled.
