Colchester Rugby club’s under-13s put the disappointment of defeat at Ipswich behind them with a well-deserved 39-24 victory over Bury in the season’s final Suffolk Cup game.

A good start was rewarded for Colchester by tries by flanker Simon Holme and centre Alex Jackson, but Bury hit back both times and it took a second try by Holme and a Jackson conversion to give them a 17-10 half-time lead.

Colchester became more dominant after the break, releasing the backs with good ball and two tries by winger Josh Harvey and ones for fly-half Tom Bellis and prop James Simpson gave a 39-10 lead that late Bury couldn’t overturn.

The under-13s B team won three of their four games at the Stowmarket Development Festival.

They beat Mistley 30-0 with tries by Robert Symonds, Jack Edwards (2), Lewis Baxter, Tom Crossley and Freddie Cooke, before Crossley scored a lone try in a 20-5 defeat by Ipswich B.

A 5-0 win against Southwold followed as Cooke went over and they finished with a 15-10 win against Hadleigh as Edwards crossed twice and Baxter once.

The UNDER-16s development side beat Southwold 43-21, but there was a narrow 17-15 defeat for Colchester by the same Suffolk UNDER-15s opponents.

The first score came for Colchester from captain Joe Storey, with a pick and drive from the base of the scrum after a good pressure by second rows Dan Pedge and Tom Bates, but Southwold led 7-5 at half-time.

Strong running saw a well-finished try by centre Eddie Smith, but a penalty and a converted try gave Southwold a lead that made Dan Pedge’s try just a consolation.

Colchester’s UNDER-14s lost 14-0 at Surrey League side Battersea Ironsides.
