Colchester Rugby Club’s under-15s added the Suffolk Cup to the Mill Road trophy cabinet after they beat Sudbury 20-5 in an exciting final.

Despite being without nine of their starting A team players, due to Eastern County commitments, it was Colchester who took the initiative with the forwards dominant in both the scrum and breakdown.

This led to the Colchester backs having plenty of ball, but they were unable to convert it into points due to a very strong and tenacious defensive display by Sudbury.

However, with the first half coming to an end, some good play from the Colchester forwards and strong running from their backs led to the first try of the match and the lead was stretched to eight points with a penalty kick by Joe Dodkins.

Things were different in the second half, though, as Sudbury started to match Colchester in the forwards and they began to run the ball at Colchester, scoring an unconverted try to make it 8-5.

However, Colchester quickly rallied and a penalty try was awarded to stretch Colchester’s lead to ten points Sudbury attacked the Colchester line once more, but the Colchester forwards dug in and again started to dominate at the breakdown.

This dominance was rewarded in the final minute when the ball was moved out to Eddie Smith on the wing and he ran in the final try of the game for a 20-5 victory.

Colchester’s UNDER-16s also had Suffolk Cup success and a 17-0 defeat of Bury means they will share the silverware with Ipswich.

Tries by wing Jordan Franklin and scrum-half George Shepherd opened up a 10-0 half-time lead and a second try by Franklin and conversion by Shepherd sealed the game after the break.

In the deciding round of their Suffolk Cup campaign, the UNDER-13s lost narrowly to Ipswich.

A physical game was dominated by strong defences and there were very few scoring opportunities with each side cancelling out each other’s attacking threats.

Winger Charlie Andrews scored Colchester’s sole try in an 8-5 defeat.

Colchester’s UNDER-14s B team rose to the challenge of their biggest game of the season so far with a rematch against Woodbridge, the only team to have beaten them.

Strong defence held Woodbridge’s heavy pack at bay and the use of a big pitch and the pace of their backs saw Colchester take the initiative.

Rob Jex scored two tries and there were also scores by Josh James, Jake Allen, Will Higgins, Harry Lee-Allan and Laurence Clark, with two conversions by Elliot Cryne in a 39-5 victory.

There was also a win for the under-14s C team, who won 50-10 at South Woodham Ferrers.
