Colchester Rugby Club’s under-14s left Old Northamptonians’ unbeaten season’s record in tatters with a 41-20 win at Mill Road to gain revenge for the narrow away defeat they suffered away in October.
The ON’s arrived with a mighty reputation and were first to score, but this acted as the wake-up call that Colchester required.
Their forwards started to inject some momentum into attack, moving the ball forward at pace at every breakdown.
It stretched Northamptonians’ defence and Cameron Ives broke for the corner to score the first try.
The Colchester pack soaked up ON’s repeated thrusts towards the line and frustrated their opponents’ ability to counter-attack at pace and it was Colchester who headed into the break with a commanding lead of 24-5 after further scores from Ives, Dan Hexley and Sam O’Brien.
The second half was as brutal as the first, with ON’s increasing the tempo, but Ethan Waddleton and Charlie Hallowes dominated the breakdown.
As the game progressed, fatigue set in and space opened for both sides.
Despite conceding three tries, scores from Oliver Pescott Frost, a third from Ives and one by Rob Jex saw Colchester seal their 41-20 victory.
Colchester under-14s B squad won 10-0 against Harlow A and the C team won at Clacton.
