David Le Grys from Little Horkesley, wins World Masters 500m TT at Manchester lastweek.
12 months ago he was in intensive care in Portugal followinga crash in the World Masters Championships.
When David returned home his battle had only just begun. Ihad also torn off my hamstring from my pelvis and have lost the use of thatmuscle and muscle memory. You have no idea what it is like when you are ridingat this level and your hamstring does not fire!!
I have seen physio’s, chiropractors, had acupuncture and itis still not functioning properly, the good news is there is a signal gettingthrough to fire but it is inconsistent, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t,it’s been very frustrating Le Grys had already pulled out of the National and EuropeanChampionships this year as he was having problems with his leg and hisbreathing due to the after effects ofhis crash last year traumatic Pneumophorax (collapsed lung) 2011 was a year for rehabilitation. The problem is “Legro”Dave’s nickname doesn’t do rehab decidedthe ride the World Championships just to see where he was, even though hechances of winning were not good.
To be honest, I was expecting to make top 4 at best, it alldepended on the performance of my hamstring. On the day I warmed up and feltok, but during one of my warm up sprint efforts I could feel my leg not workingproperly and was out of sync, I just focused on the positives, not looking atthe outcome I worked on the process of my event in my mind, visualising thewhole event in my mind to block out any negative thoughts When my time had come to race, the World Record holder, AustralianDave Wilmot had just posted a time of 34.5, I managed to beat him as well asNational and European Champion Steve Cronshaw with a time of 34.1. I was soexhausted afterwards, I could hardly stand, my hamstring failed to fire but Imanaged to beat everyone on shear mind over matter, I as very pleased.
Le Grys also won silver in the Team Sprint event riding withNeil Potter and Neil Campbell losing to Australia by 4000ths of a second Based on information supplied by DAVID LE GRYS.
