Colchester United manager Paul Lambert admitted Steven Gillespie’s fitness is a concern ahead of the big kick-off.
Striker Gillespie was forced to withdraw from the U’s 1-1 pre-season friendly draw at Rushden and Diamonds with what appeared to be a recurrance of a hamstring injury.
Gillespie, who had only just returned from a similar injury, played 55 minutes at Nene Park before asking to be substituted.
Colchester are yet to confirm the extent of his injury but he is now a doubt for their opening Coca-Cola League One game of the season at Norwich City, this weekend.
Lambert told the Gazette: “We don’t know if it’s his hamstring or not – we will have to speak to our medical people and we don't know the extent of it yet.
“The same thing happened when we were out in Germany.
“It didn’t seem like anything major looking at it but he wanted to come off and we will just have to see how he is.
“The worry is that he has only just come back and it’s happened again – that’s the concern but hopefully it’s not too bad.”
