U's handed ultimatum by Carlisle over Williams deal

Colchester United have been issued an ultimatum over the signing of goalkeeper Ben Williams.

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott wants the proposed deal for the U’s to sign Williams - which also involves Colchester striker Scott Vernon moving in the opposite direction - to be completed by the end of today.

It is understood that Vernon will move to Brunton Park as part of the transfer, with Williams joining the U’s, who will pay a nominal fee for the goalkeeper.

However, Carlisle want any transfer completed soon - or risk it falling through completely.

Abbott said: “I have put a bit of pressure on Colchester for the deal to happen.

“We weren’t too bothered at the start, because Ben has done terrifically well for us.

“But we think the deal as it stands is a good one for the club.

“If it hasn’t gone through by the end of Friday, we might end up calling it off.

“That will enable us to do something else, which is based on work that has been done on the back of that deal happening.”

Abbott also confirmed that Vernon is a player he has admired for some time.

He added: “He is the type we have been looking for, and regardless of the Ben situation, we might have made an offer for him.

“He has been watched three or four times and he has a good record at Championship and League One level.”

The U’s were unavailable for comment on the potential transfer.

Colchester will embark on their second day of pre-season training today.

The U’s reported back from their summer break yesterday at Five Lakes.

Sports scientist David Carolan said: “It went fantastically well.

“All of the boys reported back in good fettle and the effort they put in was excellent, on a very hot day.

“But there is plenty of hard work still to be done.”

Former Colchester United goalkeeper Aidan Davison has been appointed as Hull City’s new reserve team manager.

The 41-year-old, who left his role as U’s goalkeeper coach last year to move to America, has linked up again with Tigers boss Phil Brown, his former Bolton Wanderers team-mate.

Davison, who replaces Trevor Morgan in the role at the KC Stadium, made more than 100 league and cup appearances for Colchester, during a four-year playing stint with the club.

So the deal is off. Vernon has decided that he does not want to go there so the deal is off. So we now only one have one keeper with the better one gone. Good start to the season. Mt Lambert will not take kindly to Vernon refusing to move so I show pity for Scott in the coming months. Looks like the plan Lambert had has backfired on him.

I said before we would struggle to offload the deadwood players as they are on good money. It is common knowledge Carlisle have financial trouble, so Vernon would rather be a bench warmer here than a first team regular at Carlisle, and its purely down to money. I see we are still stuck with Lockwood, Heath, Ifil and Guy as no-one is stupid enough to offer similar wages to whatever they get now. At least Coyne should be off the wage bill soon even if we have to sell him for 50p.

Why does everyone seem to be negative about Paul Lambert. I think hes doing a good job.

Also Vernon should go, hes been poor throughout the season and we need this goalkeeper, i remember from last season he was pretty good.

As much as I want Vernon to leave I don't blame him for not wanting to go all the way up there.
A better move would be to Northampton or Orient! Has Jimmy Walker been snapped up yet??
Supporters need to give Paul Lambert a fair chance and get behind the team, a whole pre-season with them and then lets see where we are at Christmas.
Up the U's!

Another one bites the dust! Scott doesn't want to move to Carlisle he told Carlise Friday afternoon and then that means we now have no goalkeeper. What happened to James Walker? Has he signed for anybody yet having been released from West Ham? Come on Mr Lambert and colleagues - just what are you playing at? Get your fingers out! We are waiting for this 'quality' striker you promised and the goalkeeper you promised but your weak negotiations have come to nothing. The jury is still out on you Mr Lambert and we the fans will watch now to see if your heart rules your head and you go back to Scotland as the new manager of Motherwell. Is that why the transfer market has appeared to all intense and purposes a little lacklustre like the team's performances of last season? Up the U's!

Calm down a bit. Transfer window has only just opened. Its just that everyone started early this summer for some reason. We got a while yet. I'm sure he will snap up the right people. Also Gobern has been released by Wolves, he wasn't too bad. Hopefully Lambert does manage to sign the striker Holt.

Up the Us. Oh Btw when is the pre season friendly vs Villa?

I agree Steve86 we have still over a month to go and there will be a few changes to still take place, but the squad we have if they all work as a unit, get a lot fitter, because under GW I felt all our players were unfit!
I think Paul and his team will get them fitter and play to a higher level, as for Lewis Gobern he could be a great addition, that first home game he played against Cheltenham he was pacey and put in five or six quality crosses, but his fitness is a big issue.
All I wish for this season is what we always ask for at colu and that's attacking good football, players who put on the blue & white and give 100% for the whole 90mins and plenty of goals..roll on the 8th August up the U's!
