U's bow out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy

Colchester United were knocked out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after losing 2-1 at League Two side Northampton Town tonight.

Freddie Sears put the U's ahead on the half hour but a penalty from Adebayo Akinfenwa and Henoc Mukendi's header in the second half gave Aidy Boothroyd's Cobblers side victory at Sixfields.

Clinton Morrison was sent off for violent conduct in stoppage-time, as the U's went out of the competition at the second-round stage.

Really disappointed to exit this very winnable competition at this stage. Clinton Morrisons attitude seems to be all wrong. I think his stay will be a brief one. Good to see Sears score. He really needs to kick on now. Has underachieved for years. Tough game Saturday. Hopefully we will get back to winning ways.

didn't see this game but, I listened to it on the radio. First of all I think Dunne has to take a large slice of the blame by substituting 2 players straight after half-time when it wasn't necessary. If it's not broke don't fix it! There we were leading 1 - 0 when at the start of the second half he takes off the best midfielder on show (Bean) to replace him with rookie Gilbey who, hasn't had as much as a sniff at first team football and, swaps Okuonghae for Eastman. I would suggest those sort of changes would upset most teams stability. If this is the way Dunne plans to win matches, God help us because we'll be in for a very rough ride. Ok he wanted to give Gilbey and Wright a run so you either put them in from the start or give them the last 20 mins. or so. You don't change it at half-time when you're winning particularly, where for 18 months or more we've shown an inability to get going in the second half.

All that now remains to be said is that three times in as many years we have now gone out of this competition at the first time of asking to league 2 teams. Mr. Cowling wants to see the stadium seats filled and this is certainly not the way to go about it. Although this competition isn't a money spinner in the early rounds, it does have a habit of generating enthusiasm and uphoria in the later stages, something that the WHCS has never had and doesn't seem likely to have in the near future.

Another woeful cup exit and Dunne wants to win the Senior cup, a competition that is about the pinnacle of this club's ambition!

An extremely disappointed and unenthusiastic season ticket holder!

I think basically the changes were made so both these players would be fresher come Saturday's game. Also in these games it does give the chance for the youngsters to show any pottential they may have. To be honest I'm glad were out of this competion,so we can now concetrate on the league position which is far more important.

COBBLERS......2. u's 1.
Cant see us getting another top ten
finish this term, unless we all really get behind JD and the team. Everyone on here was calling for more attacking football under JW.. Well Joe Dunne is giving us just that: 4.3.3 against Boothroyds Northampton. Ok we came unstuck this time, so lets learn the lesson and keep the faith. Next game Stevenage, after winning at Swindon, we have nothing to fear, a good result and we're back on track.
