Ward unhappy with controversial penalty decision
Colchester United manager John Ward was adamant referee Chris Sarginson was wrong to award Scunthorpe United a controversial penalty which led to the U's sliding to a 1-0 defeat this afternoon.
Sarginson controversially ruled that Leon Clarke had been fouled in the area with 15 minutes to go and pointed to the spot, despite Colchester's protestations.
Clarke duly despatched the penalty from the spot, enabling Scunthorpe to go on and claim victory and condemn the U's to defeat and extend their run without a league win to eight matches this season.
Ward said: “I’m reluctant to complain about referees but they really should get things correct and the last couple of goals that we’ve conceded have been incorrect decisions.
“It sounds like I’m looking for an excuse and I’m not pleading bad luck or anything like that.
"We can’t do anything about that now and that’s just how life is at the moment but we have to be better in both boxes.
“We’re trying our hardest but it’s just not happening for us.
“We’re feeling a little bit sorry for ourselves at the moment but with a bit of reason.
“We have to continue to work hard and have the same attitude and approach to the game."
See Monday's Gazette for more reaction to Colchester's game with Scunthorpe and a match report and pictures from the match at Glanford Park.

If you walk now you will be timbered as nice guy that you are, if not you will be thought of the manager that gave us the worst ever start to a season in the league, and almost saw attendances half under your reign.
Go on hand in your notice and enjoy your retirement.

You even make Neil Franklin seem like a great manager and Bobby Roberts Ward. Dont you realise your a laughing stock in the football world, still some would say at least your go down as the worst col u manager bit of history there hey John. Keep it up nobody cares now anyway. Top man ward might get 1500 for our next home game and still keep your job after another defeat.
1 the footballing world does not care about col u.
2 yes we might have had the worst start ever, and if it continues, it would be the worst season ever, but Ward will go down as the manager with 3 top half finishes in league 1 as manager and assistant. The best run ever in our history.

That said, I am starting to worry about the situation now. I had a restless nights sleep last night with our form on my mind. I was knocked by many last year for accepting boring football if it got us a top ten finish and boy I would take 20th this season right now. I do think we will pick up some points soon but every game that goes by it feels further away. Dig deep is needed now before it is too late

0-0 yesterday against Scunthorpe would not have been much to enthuse about.
I really though Ward was going to resign after the Crawley match, maybe he did and it was not accepted.
John - if you are reading this and you are still in charge on Saturday against Hartlepool - the way to beat them is to play 3 at the back, a midfield 4 and 3 up front.
I guarantee this formation would get three points against this opposition.

as U's' boss and we have won only twenty nine of those matches.Or,to put it another way, fewer than a third.
This is JW's complete league record as U's' boss :
Played : 100
Won : 29
Drawn : 38
Lost 33
Goals For 123
Goals Against 141
Points 125
Since John Ward became U's manager in May 2010,the club has
lost 2000 fans,as its average league
gate has slumped by approximately
36 per cent, from the average gate
JW inherited (5529) down to this season's average (3524),although the
economic climate has played a part in this decline as some other clubs are also losing fans.
Last season John Ward's team set a new club record for the highest number of league draws in a season
- twenty - which beat the previous best - nineteen - set by Neil Franklin's
team in 1963-1964.
Perhaps John Ward's two top ten finishes are impressive. But Benny Fenton's two top five finishes
(third in 1956-1957 and fifth in 1958-1959)were more impressive.
After eight matches the U's are now
languishing in the bottom four.
After eight matches last season,
Wycombe,Exeter and Rochdale were
all in the bottom four and were
relegated.
John Ward has done some good
things for the U's.He has brought
much-needed stability to the club, following the departures of here-today-gone-tomo
rrow managers,
Lambert and Boothroyd.
He has also signed some talented players, notably Sears,Eastman and Bean.
But the U's are now facing one of their their worst crises since 1990,when the club crashed out of the Football League and at the moment it is difficult to see how the decline can be arrested.

Going back to the Franklin thing ...I can still hear 'Franklin Out, Franklin Out' reverberating around Layer Road.
If the fans had had enough back then, well they have had more than a ******* enough now - the way things are going there will be no **** left to chant 'Ward Out' or **** all else.
To save some money the club should consider playing Hartlepool behind closed doors.
Looks like Paul Jewell is off down the road ( about time too! ).

angryman!!! wrote:Normally Angryman I would agree with this statement about stability. But if you try to look at it from the other angle, you can see why Ward and stability is important.
I'm fed up with this stability crap with managers, Colchester will always be a stepping ground for players and managers, who want to work their way up, if a manager does well at the club and then gets poached by a bigger team so well, at least he's done well.
I'd rather have a lambert, Parkinson or burley for a season where we do well than ward for an era of decline
See, with lambert, Boothroyd etc, you may get a better (not great) style of football and perhaps some success like Parkinson had. But like you say, the managers and players that they bring in will often leave to climb the league ladder. Budgets are spent on higher wages and a few fee's for players. As a result the attendances will always stay at a higher figure for Colchester's standards. However, money is not spent in other areas.
With Ward and the 'stability' you mention, the idea is that he won't want a big transfer budget, and he will shop in the lower league for players as this is his last job. As a result, the club can attempt to spend money on promoting the club around Colchester and the surrounding towns as they have done in Witham and tiptree for example. Set up youth teams and establishing the club in other areas for a long term success. This is something that the club should have done years ago as. YES the attendances are lower right now, but then again 5,000 fans when we had Lambert was not that special either especially for a town the size of Colchester. We should be getting 20,000 fans (stadium permitting) every week like Ipswich do and a core 50,000 fans buying the home shirt and that is the idea behind long term stability mate.
Admittedly right now it does not look like it is working, but it is a long term plan.
So would you rather tread water for ever in league one with 5000 fans and a half decent manager coming and going, or long term sucess with a few hits along the way, even though it might be a risk?

2,484 should tell you that promoting the club in the Essex outback is a complete waste of time, effort and resource.
If you really do think we should be attracting crowds of 20,000 you need to go and see a doctor first thing Monday morning - or better still get yourself off to a walk in centre after your Sunday lunch.
Colchester United's break even figure for crowds at WHCS was 6,600 in season 2009 / 2010 - I'm not sure what it is now, but either way the club would seem to be going through one of the lows in its history.
This season is just about over before the end of September.
Interest in Colchester United has only reached the current depths perhaps once before in the last 50 years.

Hey Super, I admire your support of the club. However, no matter how much effort goes into promoting the club in the likes of Witham and Tiptree there really is nothing going on at the moment at WHCS to entice fans from 15 miles out or for that matter from Turner Rise.

Of course I understand that 20,000 fans won't turn up to watch our team perform as they are, but no one said this!!!!
Please re-read my blog. It says that with hard work and a change in mind set, Colchester united could become a hub for the community in north Essex. Potential 20,000 attendances are not a million miles away. Hull managed it as have many others.
If you are happy treading water with 5000 other col u fans watching good managers come and go, then occasional promotions and relegations I suggest you attend the walk in clinic yourself myfriend.
I never said ward was the right manager either. Especially if he relegates us. I am commenting on angry mans comments about stability only and giving him my opinions only.

This is Colchester, which unless you had not noticed is a London overspill whose additional populas treak back to London to watch football.
Not in a million ******* years will your 20,000 pipedream come true.

My view is that the 'stability' the club is after is unrealistic, as all managers and players want to test themselves at the highest level, so successfully players and mangers will always move on, we're better off hoping that mangers, players see Colchester as a club they can progress at.
I also do agree with you though that the increase in youth development and training ground is long over due, and this is a good sign for the club. However football is a results related industry and were not going to get fans through the gates when were losing but saying to them it's ok in a generations time we will have a good squad

Stability of the club is unrealistic? Maybe. Remember that that is my view though and not Col U's.
It is nice that we can agree and disagree but still have a conversation about this and feel that we want the club to move forward.
Back to Barside1, why even bother commenting if all you are going to do is criticise my opinion without really having an opinion of your own.
I think you should perhaps read mine and Angryman's interaction and perhaps learn how to converse. Either that or go and sit in the 'thick shed' with Myhouse3 who clearly has nothing productive to do on a sunday apart from troll my comments.

I have watched Ward this season and he is as animated as a corpse in the technical area, is it any wonder this bunch of going through the motions alleged footballers don't respect him either? He has acquired some very good players in the past six months but has failed to get rid of the spent dead beats that make up the rest of the squad.
He should do the noble thing and jack before you are getting less supporters than Chelmsford and Braintree, because once they have gone they will be a long time coming back and I suppose that will be the fault of the people with the valid points on here to?
