Anthony Wordsworth has urged Colchester United fans to stay behind their team following their poor start to the season.

The U’s are languishing in the League One relegation zone, having failed to win any of their opening five matches.

They have won only one of their last 19 competitive fixtures, following their 1-0 loss at Brentford last weekend.

Wordsworth has admitted that Colchester’s start to the new campaign has been disappointing.

But the skilful midfielder has called on U’s supporters to back their side to rediscover their form.

Wordsworth said: “I know it’s disappointing but the fans have to try and stay with us.

“We’re trying to put things right for them and the support we had at Brentford was brilliant.

“It really does help to have that kind of support, when they’re being positive towards us and cheering and making noise.

“The results are hard to take at the minute and we just have to go back to the training ground and go again.

“The confidence and the team spirit is still there and there’s still a buzz in training.

“It’ll all come together eventually and we’re doing the right things.”
