Ben Coker’s promising early pre-season form has made a big impression on Colchester United manager John Ward.

The attacking left-back was the only U’s outfield player to complete 90 minutes in their 2-1 friendly defeat against West Ham United.

Having been a regular for the U’s in the first half of last season, Coker failed to start a single match for the club in 2012.

The 23-year-old was given instructions to beef up during the summer and has returned for the new season in excellent shape, according to boss Ward.

Ward said: “Ben’s come back very fit and very strong and he’s put a bit of bulk on.

“He was a little bit light last year and we talked to him in the summer about working on that.

“He’s come back stronger and fitter and he’s in good shape.

“That 90 minutes against West Ham will stand him in good stead, as well as everything else he’s done over the last two weeks.

“We’re very pleased with what we’ve seen from him.”

After making a good start to his career at Colchester, I found it odd that he should get dropped at christmas. I often wondered why and now I know.
In my opinion he is far better than Rose and White. Maybe even better than tierney was too. Lets hope he has a good season then.

Nazi party, what the hell are you on about. Were talking about football super. I agree it was only your opinion and I jumped the gun. I actually agree with you in liking Ben Coker and much prefer him to Rose. Still only young and I think this season could be his year. So far things look very promising and with several youth players on the fringe of the first team who I hope will get their chance this season.

But what about playing Coker at left back and Rose ahead of him wide left?

I don't rate Rose as defender (seems always out of position), but as an attacker I do think he possibly has promise. The way he plays, he always seems to want to get overly foward and that's his downfall. But maybe as a left sided midfielder?

Yea, I think Rose has a place in the Colchester squad. He had a poor season last year and really struggled. But if Col u give him a chance lets hope that he takes it. I just prefer Coker to Rose and that is backwards or forwards. I think he has a career above league 1 for sure.
