U's win five-goal thriller in Holland

Net gain - U's new boy Freddie Sears scored his third goal in two matches in his side's 3-2 friendly win over Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem this afternoon.

Colchester United ran out 3-2 winners over a youthful Vitesse Arnhem side in their latest pre-season friendly.

Goals from Freddie Ladapo, Marcus Bean and Freddie Sears proved enough to give the U's their second successive pre-season win following the game in Holland this afternoon.

Ian Henderson had an effort chalked out near the end but a one-goal margin of victory proved enough for the U's, who fielded two separate sides in either half.

New signing Clinton Morrison was not considered fit enough to play a part but defender Magnus Okuongahe played the first 45 minutes of the match against the Eredivisie side, having re-signed for the U's last weekend.

Colchester will stay at their training base in Holland until Friday, when they fly back to Essex ahead of their home friendly against West Ham United on Saturday.

Ever more encouragement - but difficult to judge the actual strength of this (well renowned) Dutch side.

West Ham - Saturday - then Ipswich and Derby. Should better reflect the new squad's progress.

But it's most encouraging coming after the 6-0 demolition of Heybridge.

Hopefully the fans will flock back, and cease moaning about John Ward (who has made some intelligent signings) and once again get behind the town's team (as I shall).
