Gillespie quits Colchester

On his way - Steven Gillespie has left Colchester after four years with the club and signed for League Two new boys Fleetwood Town. On his way - Steven Gillespie has left Colchester after four years with the club and signed for League Two new boys Fleetwood Town.

Colchester United forward Steven Gillespie has signed for League Two new boys Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee.

The striker, who is the U's record signing after joining them from Cheltenham Town for a fee in excess of £400,000 in 2008, has ended his four-year stint at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Gillespie, 27, made 108 league and cup appearances for Colchester, scoring 28 goals.

His time at the U's was disrupted by injuries.

But he made 36 appearances last season for John Ward's side and scored 12 times, his highest season tally in Colchester colours.

Gillespie's departure leaves Colchester without a recognised out-and-out striker, following the departure of Kayode Odejayi to Rotherham United last month.

Good luck Gilly I'm gutted to see you go. I know that playing with John Parkin up front at Fleetwood and with an out and out winger in the team which their manager believes in, then you are going to score a hatfull of goals. I certainly hope so.

I just hope the club does not phone me again,as they have done in recent weeks regards a season ticket . I will tell them politely as I have done previous times, that while John Ward is the manager I will pick my games and now I feel like not bothering at all. This so called Cowling and Ward cowboy outfit are decimating this club. Mr Cowling I just hope you read this or is brought to your attention. You might have made your fortune in employment of people but regards running a football club you seem to me having no idea at all. The only good thing you have done was appointing and picking Lambert as manager. If he had stayed( just wishfull thinking) then we would not be where we are now. Norwich could see where they were heading 3 years ago , and they took drastic measures to rectify it. Simple get ride of WARD NOW before its to late.

As usual I agree with Crazy. The sale of Gillespie just about sums up what a mickey mouse club now operates in this town. Ive hated every minute of Wards reign and it will just get worse. Tactically inept, clueless in the transfer market and a Cowling puppet. We will get the usual idiots on here saying "Up the U"s" and "Col U till I die" and how they are proper fans, blah blah blah. Im in my mid thirties and up until last season have been a regular since I was 8 years old. I will not spend my hard earned money on watching a sinking ship.

First up, I cannot see a real link in this story to John Ward. For all we know he might have opposed this sale. I think we should all try and keep this thread about what it is, and that is the sale of Gilly. For good or bad.

I am a massive fan of Gilly, and I will be really sad to see him go.
I do think there is a bigger picture here to be seen.
Gilly is from Liverpool, and that is not to far from Fleetwood.
Gilly also had 1 year left on a good contract with Colchester. This type of contract would not have been offered this season, and as a result, Gilly would have left for nothing.
Gilly has also gone for a fee. I don't know how much, and I am NOT going to assume it is a lot or a little. But I do know that not many clubs will be offering a fee for players this close season.

With all of that being said, it might make good buisness sense to let him go (especially if we get two good strikers in). Equally, I really rate Gilly, and fear we might just miss him.

I won't be foolish enough to predict what will or won't happen like others. I will stay open minded, and make judgement on facts that do thake place and not make judgement on predictions.
Up the u's, and "col u till I die"

Might have known you would comment. You bore me. The club lacks ambition. It has an atmosphereless stadium, rubbish manager, arrogant chairman and they are losing fans every week. Fact.

6:45pm Mon 18 Jun 12

I think that's great news, hopefully got a some decent money for him. But as the comments above say 'lacks ambition' I have to agree... We now have no strikers... So where will goals come from next season?

On a positive note I have heard rumours about F.Sears joining Colchester after a successful loan spell from West Ham.

Patman99 says...

The main reason behind Gilly's decision to take-up Fleetwood's offer must have something to do with the fact that he may get to actually play. If he has a good season at his new club then he will be swiftly moving-on to a much higher league club than the U's.

I was a season ticket holder in the 2010/11 season and never have I watched such a lack-lustre performance. John Ward spends most of the game standing there with his arms folded. What sort of message does this convey to the players?.

Now we have the £300k from Gillespie's sale, maybe we could now afford a decent manager with some ambition. I hear Redknapp is currently looking for employment. Go on Cowling, I dare you to give him a call.

Seriously though. I wonder how many other disgruntled fans would be prepared to get together and form a rival club just like the disgruntled Man U. fans did.

Just listened to Gilly on the Fleetwood web site. No charge for having to listen to his interview. Fans love this and it gets the interest going. I also like Fleetwood ticket prices which are affordable. Also under fives get in free. This shows a club that is striving to succeed in difficult times and also trying to sell the club to its local people. Good luck to them. Gilly will be playing Div 1 next season and we will be heading southwards.

This is great news really! We sold a player who played 27 games a season scoring 7 goals that is not a very good return for £400,000.
A right waste of money but now lets draw a line under it and lets see who we can get in!!

I think the club have got something up their sleeves, they didn't accept offers for Magnus even though he was on last year of contract. Also with gilly it's always a gamble, he could of easily got injured and then we would have been saying we should have taken cash for him.
Must admit though does seem risky business with now having no strikers. I like mentioned could see fredy coming back

I have to agree with most previous comments. Whilst I am naturally concerned that we now have a lack of strikers, both Gilly and Odeyjayi having left. What does that tell you about the club? Pretty much what most of the fans on here have been warning about all of the past two seasons! Maybe our 'ambitious' Management team have decided that the only way forward is to drop a league (as we will do if we do not act quickly to bring replacement players in!) then rebuild confidence by trying to regain league one status. At this rate it looks as if a relegation season is on the cards! WHat is the latest regarding Magnus and Ben Williams? No news is good news they say! Up the U's!

So if we have received half a million for him that would have been bad business No fee was disclosed so how do we know? Any thing is possible. Cowling is not likely to tell in any case. Its his club, not ours.

Crazy, the fee is often undisclosed because of all of the add ons attached to the transfer. It is impossible to say right now how much we potentially get.

It is neither good or bad news regards Gilly at this stage because we have loads of time to bring in players, unless of course you (individually) saw him as a good or bad player. In Feistys case, he never rated him, so any fee is a bonus in Feistys eyes. In Crazys case, Gilly was a game saving player, so money is less important.

The fee is often undisclosed because of all the add ons, yeah right like agents fee, players sweetner and sometimes even a bonus for the managers, ask Harry about that one? A couple of years ago the FA stated that all transfer fees were to be transparent to stop the fiddling, that did not last long did it?

super waluigi says...
5:50pm Tue 19 Jun 12

Totally, I think you have made that up. We don't even know if Gilly has a agent! And accusing staff of bungs is a big acusation to make. I was pointing out that undisclosed often includes appearances which in Gillys injury hit career would be obvious and a promotion fee because fleetwood have a good chance of promotion.

Super Waluigi's comment was totally reasonable (although I do think he posts provocatively at times) therefore your 'effing' shows poor form.

Do you realise that when you resort to swearing, you don't help your argument with neutrals who read your points; you actually make yourself look insecure?

A shame really, as you have great football knowledge and shouldn't have to resort to insults.

Am I missing something? Consider our goalscorers last season...

Wordsworth 13 (46 appearances)
Gillespie 12 (20)
Henderson 10 (49)
Odejayi 5 (36)
Rest = minimal.

Gillespie has a decent ratio - but 20 appearances reflects his glass legs. Always an expensive liability and probably on a salary that cannot be justified. Odejai = a woeful return. Wordsworth and Henderson are still here. Ashley Vincent (out of contract) seems to have set a price that nobody wants to pay.

Seems to me good business to get a fee for Gillespie allowing John Ward to get in two proper strikers. We also have young Lapado.

I can't see that Gillespie and Odejayi will be missed if John Ward now buys wisely, and Robbie Cowling isnt stupid, as a fee for Gillespie is perhaps the only way to create the budget necessary to buy given the new 65% wage rule.

Looking for-WARD to a new era at WHCS. Let's give JW a chance to clear the decks of dead wood and make a fresh start.

Your phrase "if Ward buys wisely" sums it all up Nora 4x4, I know that you think we are all party poopers and a negative bunch but you have to be real as well. We are near the end of June and just who has Ward bought in? One new face and some youngsters have extended their time. Lets face facts, he has slimmed the squad down because Cowling told him to and has brain washed him in to thinking he can still achieve mid table mediocrity on the players that are left. I would love to see them do well but not with the current Charman, Manager or squad of players do you have a cat in hells chance. Over to you Super W

I think everyone on here has posted their own feelings whether good or bad. It all helps to get things of our chests. I hope it is a new era and that your are right Nora, but what worries me is the good wood is going and the dead wood staying. This so called 65% wage rule has me baffled. For example Rotherham, had only a 3400 attendance average last year yet are signing top players like no tommorow.
