Ward praised on two-year anniversary as U's boss

John Ward has brought much-needed stability to Colchester United, according to general manager Tim Waddington.

Today marks the two-year anniversary of Ward’s appointment as U’s manager.

The 61-year-old is close to becoming the club’s longest-serving boss since Phil Parkinson, who spent more than three years in charge of the U’s.

Ward took over in May 2010 when he succeeded Aidy Boothroyd, who spent less than a year in charge at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

And Boothroyd’s predecessor, Paul Lambert, managed Colchester for just ten months before quitting for Norwich City.

Ward has guided Colchester to successive top-ten finishes, during his two seasons in charge.

And as the U’s boss prepares for another season at the helm with a more restricted budget to work from, Waddington believes Ward is the perfect man for the job.

Waddington said: “John fits exactly what Colchester United is and that includes focusing on the youth and bringing young players through.

“Stability is hugely important at any football club and he has helped to provide that here.

“We want to lay the foundations down for things to grow, like the youth team.

“Without having the stability at the top with people like John and Joe Dunne, it’s almost impossible to do that.

“No other Colchester United managers in recent times have had to operate with the more limited resources that John has.

“But two successive top-ten finishes with a diminished resource to work from is not a bad return at all.

“He’s had two years to put his mark on the job and you can see that the players are enjoying it.

“John has had his knockers but the feedback we’ve had from most supporters now at the question and answer sessions has been very positive.

“John’s not a manager who grumbles but he now has the opportunity to have the lads in one place with the new training ground.

“He’s had to beg and borrow before in terms of training facilities but now he has everything at his disposal and it’s a huge milestone for the club.”

Ward has been a coach for the last three decades, having started out as Graham Taylor’s assistant at Watford, in 1982.

But despite his wealth of experience, Waddington believes Ward’s desire for the game is undiminished.

“John loves the game and he’s passionate about it at all levels,” said Waddington.

“He’s had something like 30 years in coaching and he’s a remarkable character.

“He has got an unwavering love of football, at all levels.

“I don’t think that he gets the credit that he deserves and football is generally a better place for people like him.”

Congratulations John Ward, I am someone who appreciates the stability that you have brought to CUFC. I know that he is not everyones favourite but he has worked hard for Colchester United and I agree with you Tim Waddington, he doesnt get the credit he deserves.

Up the U's.

Praised? Lol for what exactly? Lowering attendances with the lack of attacking football... constantly getting draws, playing not so attractive football?
With this praise it means he will be manager next season too...

Surb, try swapping places with Wycombe or Exeter. Ward has performed getting us to 10th on our budget and one of the lowest attendances. Or would you rather we got Aidy back! A bit more lucj in turning a few of the draws into wins and we would have been going for the play offs.

One of the few genuinely nice blokes in footie. Personally would like to see us abit more attacking at home all the time, it's payed off when we have been. Also maybe abit more honest/less soft responses after bad games, if the players have been good praise them if they've been bad say so, or at least dont defend them.
Also top 10 finish, why not just say 10th, a couple of points less and we would have been way down the league.

John Ward has done a good job with the team - finishing in 10th position twice but you have to remember running a football club is indeed running a business. You need customers to keep going and with JW's negative boring football at the WHCS and his awkward interviews and reactions to supporters the fans are leaving the club all the time. Our move to the new ground was supposed to be the club moving up a level regarding income and crowd size and look where we are back to layer road size crowds.

What does Wattington mean, Wards focusing on the youth and bringing young playes through. Dont give me that crap. He has had two seasons now and I have only seen two youth players giving a chance on the subs bench in that time. This is what ****-s me of big time with this club a load of goberish sh-t.

They have got stability on the blo-dy brain. If they think its the right way of running a business then they are clueless. This club wants a complete overhall from top to bottom. All you ever hear about is low attendances from certain people . Well if thats the case you then do something about it. You have to sell things for people to be interested. Just look at the news this club gives to the press during the weekdays to what is happening. Sweet F all. When Dick Graham was manager you bought the evening paper every night because you was keen to know what was happening.. You buy the Anglian and its full of news about Ipswich town. If you dont promote yourself and produce a good product which people want then failure is around the corner and you fall into deeper trouble.

Agree there, the clubs pr is terrible. All they talk about is reduced budgets, not being able to renew contracts, stability (ie we want to fin 10th again). How is this going to excite people? Even long term fan now pick and chose their games an I must admit u wil follow suit next season.
They need more positive press releases, this week has been better ie the west ham friendly training ground, but however much I hate to see it everywhere else but using a bit I spin is what needed.
Why are new fans going to come if all they read in the paper is how bad things are

Agree with various points here, he has given us a solid base, but as mentioned he is far to boring and defensive! We need to open up and at home be a lot more attacking! Fans the last couple of seasons are fed up. Top ten finishes playing average football, wonder what we could achieve playing attacking footy!!
Good point on PR every week ending in the evening standard west ham are always advertising, kid for a quid etc etc, what do the U's do, apart from keep calling me up asking why I didn't renew my season ticket.....not a lot. This town is growing very fast at the moment its time the team change their style score some goals and ENTERTAIN US then the fans will come along. Also can the football league give us some dam Friday night games, southend get loads!!

Yes think Friday football would help get a few more through, with games on tv before kick off, then goal updates of the whole country then another game after, fair weather fans would rather stay in the comfort of the pub.
