Kayode Odejayi has admitted being crowned Colchester United’s Player of the Year came as a shock.
But the powerful U’s forward said he was both “proud and honoured” to be handed the accolade.
Colchester fans voted Odejayi as the club’s best performer, in the 2011-12 campaign.
The popular 30-year-old finished ahead of runner-up Anthony Wordsworth and third-placed Ben Williams.
He received his award at the club’s End of Season awards dinner, held at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
Odejayi said: “I still haven’t got my head around it and it was a shock at the time.
“But I’m very honoured and I really appreciate the fans voting for me.
“I’ve not won anything like this before and it’s a big accolade for me, so I’m over the moon.
“I’m absolutely delighted to win the award and very proud.”
