Gillespie's goal helps to blunt the Blades

Steven Gillespie's superb equaliser helped Colchester United secure a 1-1 draw with high-flying Sheffield United tonight.
Gillespie struck 11 minutes into the second half for his ninth goal in ten matches, lifting a fine shot into the top corner from 20 yards after Kayode Odejayi had showed considerable strength to feed the ball to him.
It helped to cancel out Will Hoskins' first-half opener for the Blades, as a high-tempo affair finished all square.
Colchester had looked dangerous early on, with Ian Henderson testing Sheffield United keeper Steve Simonsen in the opening three minutes and Anthony Wordsworth also going close.
But Stephen Quinn's deflected effort went over for the visitors and Hoskins put the Blades ahead when he lifted a shot over Colchester keeper Ben Williams, from Ched Evans' pass.
Colchester responded well to the setback in the second half though.
Gillespie got the U's back on level terms with his 11th goal of the season and then went close twice in a matter of minutes soon after.
Both sides went for victory after that, with Henderson going close for the U's and Evans forced Williams into a save late on, as honours finished even.

It was also good to see John Ward getting animated towards the team at some of the dreadful passes and (lack of) marking. That's what U's fans want to see, some desire in the manager.
A great month of performances, let's hope we can keep the momentum on Saturday when we take on Huddersfield.

Second half was great and maybe we could have got another, but as mentioned above, I agree a draw was fair.
Keep the good run going and carry that momentum into next season and who knows ??????
I would have given MotM to Eastman not Magnus, I thought he was calm under pressure and did what was required.

Boris, you have done a Boris. Yes there was a good Sheffield turn out, but it was not fantastic, Colchester also had alot more fans than normal. Was your head up your Ar5e again???? Could you not fault anything else on the night????

Agreed with the Eastman comment ROBBO. That is for sure. He is looking excellent. Shame on all of the fans who knocked Ward for bringing in defenders at the start of the season.

Agreed that Boris makes some valid points on here, and once again I may have come across rude, so my apologies to Boris, yourself and anyone I may have offended with the Ar$e comment. However, I stand by the foundation to what I wrote in reply. Sheffield could have bough more to be honest (even on a tuesday) as they have a massive following. Colchester had a good turn out ourselves by our current standards. I hope this clears things up some what.

Yes, the Col U turnout was better because some of us have suddenly scented the outside chance of nicking a place in the play-offs. Could we get back to the 6000+ that saw every game at Layer Road when we were in the Championship?
I don't know how the Sheff U crowd on Tuesday night compared with other midweek away games a long way from their home. But they didn't fill the North Stand, though they spread out to make a fair attempt at doing so.

Mr Honest wrote:Yes, 33 goals in the season so far is very impressive. But John White and Tom Eastman will take care of him. I predict another draw.
Less than 5000 fans even though Sheff Utd were in Town. Shows the majority arent behind Ward. I still want him out. We beat a poor Preston team and won at Charlton which looks a good result but we got battered in terms of possession, couldnt beat a poor Wycombe and then only got a point at home. Before you all get excited, Jordan Rhodes is in Town at the weekend. He will exploit our average defenders.

After their goal, I thought the Blades with their superior skills were really going to cut us to pieces. But our lads held together well, and with Steven Gillespie in great form it looked for a while as if we were going to nick it.
At the end the South Stand was chanting "John White's Barmy Army" and nobody deserved it better.
We can't complain about the draw, which was a fair result.
