Changes have been made to Colchester Rugby Club’s line-up for their trip to Tabard in London League division one north.

Coach Tim Grimsey was unhappy with the application of some players in their 23-17 victory at Old Colfeians and has made alterations to the squad travelling to Tabard.

He said he wants the players to demonstrate the pride of wearing the Colchester shirt when they are on the pitch and won’t accept anything less than that.

“We have taken it to another level and we are still moving it on, so people have to move with us,” said Grimsey.

“The standards that we set as coaches are the standards that have to be met by the players.

“They are the ones who have to live and die by their standards.

“They can’t think it is going to be easy and all they have to do is rock up, pull on the shirt and it doesn’t matter, because it does matter.

“When we took over the coaching in 2008, we said our key aim was to put the pride back into the Colchester shirt.

“I think we have put 50 per cent of that pride back, but as we move up more pride will be put back into it.

“That’s what we have done in the last three years, now how much can we put in over the next three years?

“It really has to mean something to these people when they put the shirt on.

“Wear the badge with pride because all good teams have a badge that you can be proud of.

“I really do mean that.

“That badge matters and it matters in everything you do.

“You are doing it for Colchester Rugby Club and only the highest standards will be accepted.”

Grimsey had been scathing in his assessment of some of what he saw during the win at Old Colfeians.

He said: “I was not happy, not with that.

“After the highs of the week before (against Chingford), came the lows of the week after.

“Some of our play was uglier than the stepsisters in Cinderella.

“We were uglier than both of them put together, it wasn’t pretty. We had chances to score, but we didn’t continue to play our game.

“After being 20-7 up, we got involved in a fight.

“We didn’t have any sort of platform to play off in the second half and it became a fight at the breakdown.

“We can’t have people off the pace and we did at Old Colfeians.

“We were so soft, we were as soft as paper tissue, we really were.

“After going 20-7 ahead, I would want my team to dominate, but hand on heart, we didn’t do that.

“We didn’t say ‘we are going to put you to the sword’.

“We need that nasty edge to our game. I want to see us be more clinical than a surgeon’s knife.”
