Colchester darts star, Colin Lloyd, is looking no further than the opening round as he looks to fulfill his greatest ambition in the sport – claiming the Ladbrokes.com World Championship crown.

He is due to toe the oche at Alexandra Palace at 8.45pm on Friday night with the former 37-year-old former Stanway School pupil facing Germany’s Andree Welger.

Lloyd, who is nicknamed Jaws, said that this World Championship title is the prize he wants more than any in darts, but he isn’t allowing his mind to race away to the latter stages.

“I’m quite happy with the draw I’ve got,” he said.

“I’ve got Andree Welge in the first round and then, if I get through, it will be either Steve Beaton or Mark Hylton.

“And the way the draw looks, that would give a third round match against probably Ronnie Baxter or Roland Scholten.

“I could have got a much tougher draw than that so I’m quite happy with it.

“However, every game will be tough if you go into it with the wrong attitude.

“I don’t think I’ve got an easy draw for a minute, but I do have a nice one.

“All I’m focusing on, though, is that first game against Andree. I never look ahead when I’m at a tournament any more than what is directly in front of me.

“If you do look ahead and you fail, then the disappointment will crush you and it’s all self-inflicted.

“There’s only one game I’m looking at now and that’s against Andree Welge."
