Even a 13-try return and a 66-point winning margin from his team’s win against Woodford in London League division one north weren’t enough to satisfy Colchester Rugby Club coach Tim Grimsey.

Five tries by Jon Vine, braces by Damien Brambley and Dan Whiteman and ones for James Mitchell, Ollie Pickett, Brett Cutbush and Calum Irvine as well as nine conversions by Chris Withers in blustery conditions sealed an 83-17 win for the hosts.

And while Grimsey was delighted with three-quarters of his team’s performance, he was less impressed with the way they started and finished the game.

He said: “We should have scored 100 points, not just 83.

“The last 15 minutes was the worst we have played this season and Woodford scored two tries to our one so they won that last spell of the game.

“They also scored first as it was a bad start by us with poor defending.

“We have got to be better in the first five minutes.

“The rugby we played in the next 60 minutes was phenomenal and to be 50-5 up at half-time is every coach’s dream, but we can’t play like we did in the first five minutes against the better teams.

“I honestly don’t know why there is that inconsistency in our play.

“I know it is hard to keep going when you are 78 points up late in the game, but it could be costly if this league comes down to points difference."
