Some of the decisions made by Colchester Rugby Club’s players may lead their coaches to tear out their hair, but Tim Grimsey refused to be down on his team after they racked up their fourth win of the season.

Tries by Dan Whiteman, Chris Withers, Damien Brambley, Jon Vine and Darryl Walters delivered a 36-11 win at Ruislip and coach Grimsey was left enthusing about most of the performance, however, he was left frustrated by his players’ ability to press the self-destruct button during games.

Having had mistakes prove costly in the previous week’s defeat by Westcliff, Colchester handed some unnecessary momentum to their hosts with seconds to go to half-time as poor ball control saw them gift a try to Ruislip when more conservative play was called for.

Grimsey said the error came about through wanting to play open rugby and he refused to condemn his players for having that desire, but he wants them to realise the time and place to express their attacking flair.

He said: “We made it hard of ourselves again.

“We were 22-3 up and had a line-out in our own 22, which we won and decided to kick over the top, but their number eight had hung back and ran it back for a try.

“So instead of it being 22-3 at half-time, it was 22-8 and they were on the front foot. It was very frustrating as we didn’t need to do what we did."
