Colchester United beaten by ten-man Carlisle

Colchester United's promotion hopes suffered a blow this afternoon when they were beaten 2-1 by ten-man Carlisle United at Brunton Park.

Colchester looked bright early on with midfielder David Fox, one of four changes to their starting line-up going close in the opening seconds.

Cumbrians keeper Adam Collin tipped away Kevin Lisbie's deflected volley but debutant Jason Price squandered two glaring opportunities for the home side before half-time.

Colchester were handed a major boost just before the break when Carlisle midfield man Tom Taiwo picked up two cautions in the space of 12 minutes and was sent off.

U's boss Aidy Boothroyd made three substitutions after that and one of their replacements - Clive Platt - broke the deadlock midway through the second half.

He slotted home calmly after Carlisle had failed to clear their defensive lines and fellow substitute Phil Ifil had picked him out in the area.

But the U's lead was short-lived.

Just a minute later, Price escaped down the right and squared the ball for Ben Marshall to finish emphatically from close range.

And Carlisle turned the match on its head five minutes later when Price poked in at the near post, from Richard Keogh's low cross.

Platt sliced wide from Ifil's cross late on but Colchester were unable to muster a precious equaliser.

I hope most of the other Col Utd supporters feel a lot more cheerfull than I do this evening. I was gutted to hear that we had lost against ten men. With not much else to do today, I travelled down to Southend to go and watch a game of football. Nothing else. It was a chance to see just how the Boothroyd rejects were playing. Its was a dullish afair match with few chances to either team but Scott Vernon did miss an absolute sitter in front of goal. Nothing new about that. Barney if he had still been here would have burried that one it was let known by the crowd. What a bargain Southampton got at £175,000. However moving on,when I hear that Aidy has engaged a Psychologist for the team I personally think it's him that needs one of these. Watching Pat Baldwin playing today makes me fill up with anger. How the hell is he playing for Southend, when we have Matt Heath who is not in the same class playing for us instead. I personally think Boothrord has not a mucking clue regards tactics or good players. Baldwin stands head and shoulders above Heath and is twice the player. Today he was commanding and dominated every single ball in the air. He organised his defence at corners and free kicks, and was constantly bawling at his team mates. This is how a true captain should be acting on the field. I was speaking to a few Southend fans behind the goal and they were ashtonished how we were allowing a player like Baldwin to join them. Then to top the lot I hear on the radio Henderson is playing for us today, yet Hackney a true left sided player is allowed out on loan. Having seen Henderson play at Norwich a few seasons ago I knew what he was about. Does a lot of chasing and snapping at peoples heels but does liitle else in regards being a creative player. Certainly not a left winger. I upset a few many people on this site to remarks I made a few months ago regards the style and the way we play and i've certainly not changed my views. I watch as many football games in a season as I possibly can and yes I only support one team and thats Col Utd. When its not possible for me to watch them playing then I go to watch other games. I had a good idea of those other teams I watched earlier in the season who I thought would be up there with us end of season, and i'm spot on who they are at this point. I hate saying this but not once this season have I really seen the U's completly outplay the opposition apart from Norwich away and Charlton at home or have watched to many games at home or away this season that have been terribly exciting. Boothroyd keeps harping on that we are an attacking team so where the hell are the goals to show for it. I do hope that I am proved wrong and that the rest of you are right but in my opinion it will be a battle to stay in the play offs not unless we start playing football as it should be played. Im always honest with myself in regards what I watch and see and give praise where its due no matter what team i might be watching.. I might be a old **** to most of you but we would never succeed in the championship and would come straight back down again. Peterborough have changed managers twice this season as you are all aware. They brought Jim Gannon in because the previous manager used Aidy style tactics which did not go down with the players and the fans hated. I still pray that we will succeed and I will still be at the next home game supporting them to the final whistle win or loose.

I agree to almost all above, Baldwin should be along side Magnus, but not to beat ten men when a win was a must is a joke! The teams around us lost again but we failed again, what's that one point out of nine I think!
Does this club want to go up....I am beginning to wonder....!!

I agree with crazy today and agree Pat should be back, as captain alongside Paul Reid as magnus looks jittery to me. Norwich have done us a favour beating Huddersfield as I now fear dropping out of the play offs the way we are playing. At least Aidy was honest in his interview saying the team were amateur, strange comment when your the manager and responsible

Glad to know thats two people I have not upset. I did forget to mention somerthing else. Izzet gets a new contract yet Tierney could leave on a free end of season. I still fear if we lost Tierney it would be a massive blow, yet Aidy states contracts on players will have to wait till end of season. Surely we should be doing all our power to get these players signed to longer contracts . We have lost so many good players on free's over the last few years Chilvers,Iwelumo, Jackson etc.

We have played rubbish for the last 3 games in defence... and who has been playing all of these games... Matt Heath! This is the time where we need to be winning the games, and once again our defence is weaker then ever... and our strikers don't seem to want to score, does one need to come on as a sub to score? Where is the motivation in this highly paid players?
