Ipswich Town's attempt to sign Carlisle United defender Ian Harte has failed

Carlisle United have rejected Ipswich Town’s loan bid for Ian Harte, according to reports in Cumbria.

The Blues were said to have made their offer last week, with one of their up-and-coming players heading in the opposite direction.

Whether the latter was seen as a temporary or a permanent move is unclear.

The report suggested Town wanted to sign left-back Harte on loan, with a view to making the move permanent in January.

However, Carlisle have rejected their approach for the former Republic of Ireland international.

The 32-year-old, who previously played under Town boss Roy Keane at Sunderland, started his career with Leeds United.

He stayed at Elland Road for nine years until 2004, when he moved on to Levante in Spain.

He joined Keane’s Sunderland in 2007 but left the following summer. He signed for Blackpool last December, remaining there until March when he joined Carlisle.

A set-piece expert, he is currently the Cumbrians’ seven-goal top-scorer and is on a two-year contract at Brunton Park.

Keane was looking to sign two loan players before today’s deadline – one a striker from a club outside of the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins has dismissed claims he is chasing Town midfielder Owen Garvan.

Various clubs, including the Iron, have been linked with the Irishman, who made his long-awaited return to the Ipswich team for Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Others reported to be chasing his signature include Cardiff City, who Town visit on Sunday, former boss Jim Magilton’s Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest.

Of his alleged interest in Garvan, Adkins said: “It’s totally wrong and have I made an enquiry about him? No.”

Adkins has also been linked with a move for Town midfielder Liam Trotter, who spent the end of last season on loan at Glanford Park.
