Michael Cheek scored a second-half winner as Braintree Town maintained their recent good form with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Woking at the Avanti Stadium.

Braintree went into the game in good form, having lost only one of their previous nine games.

But the first half was a tight affair, with little in the way of goalmouth action.

Neither goalkeeper had much to do in the opening 45 minutes, as both sides cancelled each other out before the break.

The closest Braintree came to scoring came just before half-time when Taylor Miles’ effort crashed against the crossbar.

The woodwork came to Woking’s rescue again when Cheek’s effort hit the frame of the goal.

But after some good Iron pressure, Akinola broke the deadlock on the hour when he finished coolly after racing through on goal.

However, Braintree’s lead lasted only five minutes after a Bruno Andrade corner was headed in by Keiran Murtagh for 1-1.

The contest became stretched after that, with the Cards galvanised by their equaliser.

But Braintree got back in front with a direct move which resulted in Cheek showing calmness to round the Woking goalkeeper and finish superbly for 2-1.

With goalkeeper Will Norris struggling increasingly with an injury, Woking went in search of a second equaliser.

However, the Iron stood firm despite five minutes of stoppage-time being added to claim a well-earned victory.
