Callum Harriott has targeted more goals for Colchester United after scoring their winner against Gillingham.

The 21-year-old winger’s sweet strike helped the U’s claim a 2-1 victory over the Gills and end the visitors’ unbeaten record.

Harriott has provided numerous goals for his team-mates since arriving on loan from Charlton Athletic, last month.

But his impressive strike against Gillingham was his first since he netted for the Addicks in their 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, last December.

And having now got off the mark, the Colchester loanee is now eying more goals during his spell at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Harriott said: “It’s been a good start for me and the team have been doing well, too.

“For me, I don’t think I’ve scored enough but I’ve got that first goal now so hopefully, I can kick on from there.

“I go into every game wanting to score.

“When I was at Charlton, I wasn’t getting much playing time, just coming off the bench.

“Having got back playing I feel loved again and that’s what it’s about.

“I know what I can do and I believe in myself – I just have to show it.”

Harriott has not tasted a league defeat for Colchester since joining them on loan until January.

He has helped them claim eight points from a possible 12 and played his part in the U’s rising into the top half of the table for the first time this season.

“It shows that we’re not a team that’s messing around,” said former West Ham trainee Harriott.

“We’re picking up points, so we need to keep that going.

“Perhaps people thought we were a bit of a runaround team when we were low in the table.

“But we play good football, we’ve got a good ground, good supporters and we’ve got goalscorers – we just need to continue what we’ve been doing.

“We’ve been working hard in training every day getting it right and we’ve been sharpening things up defensively, as well.

“We got our first win at Sheffield United, which was a good win for the club.

“We knew we had to keep it going and we showed them (Gillingham) that this is our ground.”
