Colchester United manager Tony Humes could not hide his disappointment after his side played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Chesterfield this afternoon.

The U’s played against ten men for the majority of the game at the Proact Stadium, after Spireites defender Drew Talbot was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity following a foul on U’s debutant Marvin Sordell.

But Colchester found themselves trailing 3-1 with 14 minutes remaining, before George Moncur’s strike and a Charlie Raglan own goal rescued them a point.

The U’s, who had equalised earlier in the contest through Gavin Massey’s first goal of the season, also hit the woodwork three times and boss Humes felt it was a game his side should have won.

Humes said: “We’re massively disappointed we’ve only got a point.

“Even before the sending off, it was a game we felt we should have won.

“We scored three times but we should have scored three times more than that.

“It’s about having that ruthlessness and being clinical at both ends of the field when it matters and doing it under pressure.

“All we can do is what we’ve done over the last few weeks and that’s work on that defensive aspect of the game, which we have done.

“We pleased how we played the game going forward but defensively, you can’t do that.

“We’re playing some fantastic attacking football and that’s great.

“But for the amount of chances we’re creating, we’re not scoring enough goals and killing games off.

“And we’re not being strong enough defensively as a team, to limit the opportunities at the other end.”
