West Mersea sailor Martin Evans will head into Cowes Week in confident mood after landing a national title.

The 23-year-old dominated the Standard fleet to claim overall victory at the Neil Pryde UKLA National and Open Laser Championships, in Cornwall.

Evans won the title with a day to spare at Mount’s Bay Sailing Club after securing a total of 14 points overall.

Jack Wetherell finished as overall runner-up on 22 points, while James Gray was third with 47 points.

Evans posted on Facebook: “National Champion with a race to spare!

“Harder day today with an 11th in the first race but came back with a 1.2 to seal the deal.

“Nice work to Jack Wetherell Sailing who put my heart rate up a couple of times today!”.

It made up for Evans’ disappointing display at last month’s Europeans, where he finished 28th.

Evans is now competing at Cowes Week, one of the oldest and largest regattas in the world.

Boats sail from all over the world for the competition, which is staged off the coast of the Isle of Wight.

Evans is competing in the Contessa 32 category at the event, where he will be hoping to follow up his success in Cornwall.
