An astute tactical call and a supreme bit of driving combined to give Alex Lynn a debut GP2 Series pole position in Hungary.

HAving struggled to make an impact on the starting grid in the last three rounds of the championship, the 21-year-old from Dunmow set that record straight in searing temperatures at the Hungaroring.

Lynn was sat down in seventh overall as the drivers completed their opening flying laps towards the start of the half-hour qualifying session.

However, as all the other teams made alterations during the middle part of the session and their drivers sat in the pit lane, Lynn's DAMS Racing team sent him and his team-mate, Pierre Gasly out on to the circuit.

With the track empty, it gave Lynn the space to put together a scorching lap that put him at the top of the provisional standings.

And when his rivals returned to action at the end of the session, no-one was able to better his time as he and his team's gamble paid rich dividends.

It means that Lynn will start on the front row of the grid in a GP2 feature race for the first time when it gets under way on Saturday.
