EASTERN Rhinos consolidated their position at the top of the Rugby League London premier division table with victory over West Warriors.

The Warriors were always dangerous with ball in hand but the game was largely dominated by the big Rhinos forwards.

The home side had the best of the opening exchanges, but some determined defending from the Warriors kept the Rhinos at bay.

However, after ten minutes a perfectly-weighted grubber kick by Peter Le Marquand into the in-goal area eluded the defenders and Brett Cutbush collected and touched down.

Le Marquand converted to give his side a 6-0 lead.

Going into the second quarter, the Warriors hit back.

From a scrum 30 metres out, some smart handling set up Dawson for a try to bring them within two points.

Both defences held firm until just before half-time when the Rhinos edged further ahead.

Jesse Walker was tackled in front of the posts and from a quick play-the-ball Adam Cook darted over from close range, giving Le Marquand an easy conversion to make it 12-4 at the interval.

The Rhinos extended their lead early in the second half following a sweeping move from a scrum to touch down out wide.

Le Marquand was again on target with the conversion but midway through the half the Warriors reduced the arrears when Dawson outflanked the home defence to touch down in the corner.

However, the Rhinos dominated the final quarter.

With five minutes remaining Adam Walker drove to the line and from his quick play-the-ball Cook scooted over for his second try to wrap up the contest.

Eastern Rhinos’ final game of the regular season before the play-offs is against Medway Dragons on August 1 at Colchester Rugby Club, kick-off 2.30pm.
