Colchester race walker Dominic King says a feeling of unfinished business is fuelling his desire to book an Olympic spot.

The Colchester Harriers athlete has set his sights on booking his place in the Team GB squad for the 50k walk event, at Rio 2016.

King, along with his twin brother Daniel, has stepped up his bid to secure the qualifying time of under four hours two minutes, required to book a spot at next year’s Olympics.

And the 32-year-old is hoping to improve on his performance at London 2012, where he finished 51st in the men’s 50km walk in 4h 15m 05 seconds.

King, whose current personal best is 4h 6m, said: “My main goal is to achieve the Olympic qualifying time for the 50k event, later in the year.

“London 2012 was an amazing experience.

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and something not many athletes get, to compete at an Olympic Games in their own country.

“But I feel I have unfinished business at the Olympics - I don’t feel that I got the most out of myself in London, for one reason or another.

“My main aim was to finish the race and not get disqualified like I did at the Commonwealth Games, in Manchester.

“I wanted to finish the Olympics race and put the performance in.”

King said he was pleased with his performance at last weekend’s British Athletics Championships, which he used as preparation for achieving the Olympic 50km walk qualification.

He claimed 5,000m walk bronze in Birmingham, after clocking a time of 21m 01.70s.

“It was good to get a medal, although I would have preferred it to have been gold,” said King, who is aiming to secure Olympic qualification at an event in Germany in October.

“I’d have also liked a quicker time but the 5k is one of the shorter distances.

“But the good thing about it is that it’s part of the British Championships and it’s quite a prestigious one, because it takes place in front of the track and field events.

“A lot of the domestic race walks take place on the road and you obviously don’t get 1,000s of people watching them at the stadium.

“It’s good to showcase the event, as race walking doesn’t get much publicity and not many people get to see it.”

King will compete for Essex in the 3k race at the Southern Counties Senior Inter-County match in Crawley, this weekend.
