Primary Schools from around Colchester and Tendring came together to compete at the Rugby Pups World Cup.

Each primary school was allocated a country to represent just to add a bit more competitive fun and as an acknowledgement of the upcoming Rugby World Cup to be held in England later this year.

Over 100 Year 2 and 3 pupils contested the Tag Rugby Tournament at Colchester RFC, Mill Road, in the perfect weather for running rugby.

Most children in attendance had never played a competitive game of tag Rugby, but as the action was under way, that was impossible to tell.

There was a great mixture of team effort and individual show of skill as plenty of tries were scored and many tags taken

Birch (New Zealand) and St. Teresa’s (Fiji) topped their closely contested pools, with all teams progressing through to Bowl, Plate and Cup semi-finals.

In the semi-finals all teams seemed to up the intensity of the rugby, whilekeeping smiles on their faces.

All the semi-finals were very tight.

Langham (Scotland) won the Bowl; Highfields (France) won the Plate in a very closely contested game against Great Bentley (Australia).

Engaines (Wales) secured their place in the Cup Final after beating the only team to win all their pool games, St. Teresa’s, in the semi-final during the last play of the game.

They faced off against Birch.

The game was played at a great standard and was a total back and forth encounter, but Engaines overcame Birch three tries to one to win the cup.
