DEPARTING Harwich and Parkeston joint-boss Mark Sharp has admitted it is a “wrench” to leave the Shrimpers.

But he says he could not turn down the opportunity to coach within Ipswich Town’s acclaimed Academy.

The 46-year-old has been offered a part-time role with the Championship club and has relinquished his role at the Royal Oak.

Joint-boss John Fidgett is thought to be willing to stay involved, but does not want to run the team on his own.

“It’s a wrench to be leaving, because I’ve been in and around local football for the last 20 years,” said Sharp.

“The last six or seven of those have been at Harwich.

“It’s been tough at times but I wouldn’t change a thing and have enjoyed being involved.

“(Chairman) Tony Armstrong and his committee work so hard to keep the club going and I really wish them well.

“I know we harp on about the history, but it’s very sad to see the club struggling.

“I’ve left on good terms and have said that if there’s anything I can do to help, I certainly will.

“It’s just that I can’t commit both to the club and Ipswich.

“When this opportunity came along, I knew it would be impossible to do both roles and something had to give.”

Sharp (pictured) is looking forward to taking up his new part-time role at Ipswich.

He begins early next month and expects to be working within the foundation age group, coaching nine, ten and 11-year-olds.

“It’s something new for me, a fresh challenge and a different environment to work in,” said Sharp.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started.

“I’ll do my best to help the children improve and progress, but it will also be good to be around coaches that can help me improve.

“To be asked now is too good an opportunity to turn down and a great chance to further my coaching education.”

Sharp had previously been working within Ipswich’s Elite programme.

On odd occasions, he has stepped in and helped with Academy sessions.
