Laura Stephens was unfortunate to miss out on a semi-final spot at the European Games.

The Colchester Swimming Club member was fifth fastest overall in her women’s 200 metres butterfly heat, in Azerbaijan.

Stephens won her heat after clocking an impressive time of two minutes 13.69 seconds, at the Baku Aquatics Centre.

The talented 16-year-old was fifth fastest out of a field of 25 swimmers but it was still not enough for her to progress to the semi-finals.

Stephens missed out, as she finished as the third-fastest British athlete.

Fellow British swimmers Holly Hibbott and Amelia Clynes recorded the fastest two times of all the athletes who competed.

And in the Junior European Championships - which is incorporated into the European Games - only a maximum of two swimmers from each nation can qualify for the final.

That meant that the unfortunate Stephens was unable to progress past the heats.
