Colchester United have completed their second signing of the summer after bringing in defender Matt Briggs on a permanent deal.

The U's have signed the attacking left-back on a two-year deal, following his loan spell with the club at the end of last season.

Briggs played 18 games for Colchester in the final three months of the 2014-15 campaign while on loan from Millwall, helping them preserve their League One status on the final day of the season.

The 24-year-old, who was one of a number of players released by the Lions at the end of last season, becomes the U's second permanent signing of the summer following the arrival of Richard Brindley on a permanent deal last month.

U's boss Tony Humes told the club's website:

"He has got a lot of the attributes we’re looking for and he showed at the end of the season that he’s improving with games.

"You're looking at him fitting into the back four as an attacking left back and he has a real physicality and technical ability. He has got those attributes in abundance.

"He still needs to get better on some of the defensive parts of the game, but that will come through his knowledge and understanding of playing every week.

"He will gain confidence in playing regular football and get that consistency and, with all of his attributes, he's got real potential to push on."
