COLCHESTER Amateur Boxing Club enjoyed double success at the Devizes ABC dinner show.

Blake Marshall and Molly Yates were presented with trophies by former light heavyweight champion Nicky Piper, following their success at the Wiltshire event.

Marshall took on Yate ABC’s Ned Cash, hoping to bounce back from his recent narrow defeat on his competitive debut.

And the Colchester boxer made a fast start, taking the initiative from the opening bell. Cash tried to land long punches and catch Marshall as he came forward.

But Marshall answered with combinations to head and body.

And although Cash covered up on the inside, Marshall threw hooks around the side of the guard and found the target at least once.

The second and third rounds followed the same pattern.

Cash stayed competitive and attempted some long lead shots and counter punches. But Marshall’s sustained attacks and determined work on the inside caught the eye and secured him a well-deserved points decision.

Yates boxed in a no-decision skills contest against Devizes’ Jodie Williams, who became the first-ever female to represent her club.

Both boxers used their front hand in the opening round to display their skills.

Williams showed plenty of ability for a debutante but experience showed as Yates had the edge in form and sharpness.

In the second round, the boxers threw punches to loud cheers from the crowd.

Williams’ determination and head movement belied her experience as she begun to find her rhythm.

But Yates’ controlled defensive boxing helped her draw her opponent’s lead and counter punches with sharp, one-two combinations. Both boxers stepped up the pace in the final round, with Williams making a really fast start.

But Yates used clever defences to weather the storm and stuck to some clean, clever boxing.

As the pace slowed, Yates’ long lead left hands and well timed one-two combinations started to increasingly find their mark.

Both boxers received rapturous applause from the crowd at the end of an entertaining bout.
