SCOTLAND'S two outstanding sportsmen of 2008 are vying for the title of Glasgow's Sportsperson of the Year.

A prestigious awards ceremony, which honours sporting Scots from all walks of life, is being held tonight at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Triple Olympic champion cyclist Chris Hoy and tennis star Andy Murray are fighting it out for the main prize.

Both are former winners but their exploits in 2008 make them joint favourites to scoop this year's title too.

A total of 13 awards will be presented, some to unsung heroes who have worked hard behind the scenes in their communities.

Youngsters and rising stars will also be honoured, as well as coaches and the city's best team and club of 2008.

The winners will receive awards at a glittering black-tie dinner.

Other nominations for the top prize include another former winner - Glasgow athlete Lee McConnell - Olympic rower Katherine Granger, swimmer Hannah Miley and curling champion David Murdoch.

Also shortlisted are canoeist Campbell Walsh, judo champion Euan Burton and Mark Price, of Glasgow Underwater Hockey Club.

Nominations are put forward by members of the public and the winners are chosen by a panel of experts. Previous winners include Celtic legend Billy McNeill, former Scotland rugby captain Gavin Hastings, swimmer Rebecca Cooke and athlete Liz McColgan.

The Evening Times is the event's media partner and sponsor of two categories - the primary and secondary Sports School of the Year.

The awards dinner is now in its 17th year, although the Sportsperson of the Year award dates back to 1964.

Gongs will be presented in the following categories: Sportsperson of the Year; Glasgow Disabled Athlete of the Year; Service To Sport Lifetime Achievement; Glasgow Team of The Year; Glasgow Young Sportsperson of the Year; Glasgow Club of the Year; Glasgow Sports School of the Year (Primary and Secondary); Glasgow Student Athlete of the Year; Glasgow Coach of the Year; Volunteer of the Year; Leader's Special Award; and the Lord Provost's Award.

TV presenter Richard Gordon will be host for the third year in a row.
