WHILE the world lightweight and junior championships at Strathclyde

Park in 1996 may still seem a long way off, another significant

organisational step for the event was taken at a recent meeting hosted

by the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association.

The meeting, attended by various council and agency representatives,

was told that more than 50 nations, with a current spending power of

#5m, were expected to send teams.

Most at the meeting said they would help the association, with the

next stage now to take part in a high level committee that would put

together a structure.

Meanwhile, the action moves to Stirling on Saturday with more than 70

crews from clubs as far apart as Inverness and Glasgow racing on the

Forth. Saturday is also closing date for entries to this year's Scottish

and Bank of Scotland Scottish Schools Championships.
