UNDERDOGS were to the fore in the Braintree Table Tennis League.

While most match results elicited few raised eyebrows, there were individual performances that will have given the individuals concerned considerable satisfaction.

Simon Fleming can be very pleased with his win over Nikki Davison in Rayne C’s 9-1 defeat by Netts A, while Black Notley A’s Chris Parr will have been happy to gain revenge on Simon Webber, who had beaten him the previous week and who went on to a semi-final place in the individual championships.

Liberal A went on to win that one 9-1.

Gordon Fairchild is another player with a smile on his face.

Playing up from division two, he won twice in Notley A’s 6-4 defeat by Rayne D while his team-mates won only once.

Alistair Hill had a particular reason for satisfaction.

He beat his father Jon in Rayne A’s 6-4 win over Netts B.

Other division one results: Rayne B 3 Liberal B 7 (three wins for Mike Johnston); Felsted RBL A 0 Rayne D 10; Netts A 8 Netts B 2; Liberal A 10 Rayne C 0; Rayne A 9 Liberal B 1.

Steve Willis pulled off the win of the week in division two.

With only three wins behind him all season, Willis overcame Gary Jackson, a player with a 66 per cent average, in Hedingham Lions’ 9-1 defeat by Notley E.

Jackson seems to have a bit of a blind spot as far as Willis is concerned.

He was the only player he lost to in his comeback season in division three last year.

This time it was close – 6-11, 12-10, 14-12, 17-15 – but a win is a win.
