Colchester United boss Tony Humes is hoping to sign an experienced centre-half before the transfer window closes tonight.

Humes was delighted with the impressive performance of Tom Eastman and Alex Wynter at the heart of the U’s defence, in their 1-1 draw at Bradford City.

But he is keen to sign an established defender to replace Kaspars Gorkss, who quit the club to join Greek side Ergotelis last week.

Humes has until 11pm tonight to secure a permanent signing before the window closes – but said he is also considering loan signings to bolster his defence.

He said: “We’ll be looking at bringing in an experienced defender, if we manage to get one."
