Harwich and Dovercourt’s second string side ran out 19-7 winners at Halstead Templars, in the inaugural Andrew Grimes Charity Shield.

Nearly £700 was raised for charity, following what is set to become an annual fixture on the respective clubs’ calendars.

A mixed Harwich side travelled to take on the Templars.

Simon Woodley played his first competitive game for the club, while Richard Miller and Marcus Turner also turned out for the first time this season following long absences.

Harwich started well but were unable to converted possession into points, as the Halstead defence stood firm.

But Harwich took the lead when fullback Sam Male spotted a gap and chipped through for Matt Green to chase, collect and score a try which was converted by Male.

The visitors extended their lead through Adam Palmer, who benefited from Craig Wilson’s good work to touch down for an unconverted try to consolidate a slender lead.

James Cullen came close to increasing Harwich’s lead only to run out of steam just before the line, allowing the home defence to swallow him up.

But Halstead continued to play with great commitment, creating opportunities and coming within touching distance of the Harwich line.

The visitors defended well until a turnover ball on the Harwich five metre line saw Halstead outstrip the defence for the try of the day.

The Green brothers, Kyran and Matt, both put in outstanding performances for Harwich.

They were capped when they linked up in open play, leaving Kyran with the task of touching down to add to the visitors’ score tally.

Young flanker Matt Green was named Harwich’s man of the match, following an impressive all-round performance.

The money raised from the Andrew Grimes Shield will go to The Brain Tumour Charity and Taps, a local charity which provides transport for sick children to get to hospital.

Harwich II travel to play Woodbridge, this weekend.
