Penalty hero Sam Walker is on the verge of signing a new contract with Colchester United.

Walker, who made a crucial spot-kick save to deny Aaron McLean in the U's 1-0 win over Peterborough United in the FA Cup, is expected to put pen to paper on a fresh deal.

The former Chelsea shot-stopper, whose current contract runs out at the end of the season, has been talks to extend his stay at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

And Walker, 23, is set to hand the U's a boost by committing his future to the League One club.

U's boss Tony Humes said: “Sam’s contract has now been drawn up and I think he’s about to sign it, so that is a positive.

“I don’t think there are any problems there.

“I think it’s going to be done on Tuesday.

“It’s all printed and done but I’m not going to promise until it’s all signed and sealed.

“But I’m assured that it’s all going to be signed on Tuesday.”

Walker, who joined Colchester on a permanent basis last January after two successful loan spells with the U's, has to date made 92 league and cup appearances for the club.
