There will be more than just either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg crowned as a new motor racing champion in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

While the duelling Mercedes duo battle for Formula One honours at the Yas Marina circuit, Dunmow’s Alex Lynn is hoping to wrap up his own piece of glory as he stands on the verge of claiming the 2014 GP3 Series crown.

The 21-year-old, who has his sights set firmly on a step up into F1 himself in the next couple of years, is odds-on favourite to take the GP3 title and needs just two points to become the champion.

But with Formula One team bosses continuing to keep a close eye on his progress and as a member of the prestigious Red Bull Junior Programme, Lynn doesn’t just want to coast over the line, though.

He said: “I’m actually really excited – that’s the word to use rather than nervous or anything.”

GP3 qualifying at Yas Marina starts today at 11am (British time), with race one on Saturday at 8.05am and race two at 9am on Sunday.
