George Moncur is on the verge of extending his loan stay with Colchester United.

The West Ham midfielder has been a big hit since joining on the eve of the new season, scoring on his debut in the U's 2-2 draw against Colchester.

His current deal is due to expire early next year but he could be about to sign an extension, keeping him at the club until the end of the season.

“We’ve spoken to West Ham about George,” said Colchester boss Tony Humes.

“They gave him clearance to play in the FA Cup and, without being 100 per cent finalised, we’re pretty close to getting him for the rest of the season.

“That would be great and, from the player’s perspective, he’s enjoying his football here.

“He’s settled, playing week in, week out, and it would give him real focus to know where he’s going to be for the rest of the season.”

Discussions over the futures of keeper Sam Walker and goal king Freddie Sears – both out of contract next summer – are “ongoing”.

“Sam said last week that he’d like to stay,” said Humes.

“There have been further discussions and hopefully we’re getting closer to sorting something.

“It’s ongoing with Freddie, too.

“He’s in very good, goal-scoring form.

“His movement causes problems for defenders, he creates space for others and I’ve been delighted with him.

“Clearly they’re both players I’d like to keep at the club and they’re both happy, enjoying their football and enjoying what we’re trying to do here.”

Meanwhile, Colchester have received a major cash boost after their FA Cup second-round tie at home to Peterborough was picked for live TV coverage.

The tie will now be played on Sunday, December 7, kicking-off at 4.30pm, and shown live on BT Sport.
