Colchester Royal Grammar School pupil Matt Watson is hoping to make a big impression when he takes part in England trials this week.

The 17-year-old open-side flanker is looking to show what he can do when he links up with the national under-17 squad in Leeds for a two-day training camp tomorrow.

Watson has a big incentive to do well, with a place in the England starting line-up for their forthcoming international against France up for grabs.

The Year 12 student admits he has a few nerves but is looking forward to showing the selectors what he can do.

Watson said: “I was very surprised when I got the call but also absolutely delighted.

“I’m really excited about the trials but also nervous at the same time.

“I think playing for Northampton Saints has definitely improved my overall game and I feel that I’ve been quite consistent.

“My goal this year is to keep getting better as a player.

“But another objective of mine is to try and secure a starting place for the game against France.

“I’ll be with some of the best young players in the country at the training camp and that can only help to improve my game.”

Watson has been a stalwart for Colchester Royal Grammar School’s first XV this year.

He has also been regularly representing Northampton Saints Academy side and is currently studying for his AS Levels, making for a busy time for the teenager.

“It’s quite hard to juggle the rugby and my studies at the moment but I’m coping OK at the minute,” added Watson, who lives in Hatfield Peverel.

“I’d love to have a career as a rugby player and doing these things along the way can only help you get there.”

The England under-17 trials take place on Wednesday and Thursday.
