Colchester United were beaten 3-1 by promotion-chasing Peterborough United this afternoon, in an eventful game at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

U's goalkeeper Sam Walker denied Conor Washington from the penalty spot in the fourth minute, after Sammie Szmodics had been ruled to have handled Kyle Vassell’s free-kick.

Gavin Massey and Ben Gordon were both denied by Peterborough goalkeeper Ben Alnwick in quick succession after that.

But the U's fell behind in the 20th minute lead when Washington raced onto Christian Burgess’s pass to score.

And Kgosi Ntlhe doubled Peterborough's lead five minutes later when he finished well after Joe Newell had caused the home side problems in the area.

Walker twice denied Vassell after that but to their credit, Colchester kept going.

They were desperately unlucky not to score in the second half when Alex Gilbey's fine strike thumped against the underside of the crossbar and substitute Sanchez Watt made a big impact when he came on.

Sears then missed a glorious chance but a minute later he exchanged passes with Watt before firing home to get Colchester back in the game.

But Peterborough went 3-1 up with 13 minutes to go through Jermaine Anderson, who converted from five yards from Washington’s low cross.

Peterborough goalscorer Ntlhe was sent off for a second bookable offence with nine minutes remaining to finish the game with ten men, but the U's fell to a fourth successive league defeat.

For five pages of coverage of the U's game with Peterborough, see Monday's Daily Gazette.

Eventful game, for sure.
Officials were poor & we didnt get many of the breaks BUT:
we are incredibly pedestrian going forward ( or sideways often! ), we need a striker who looks sharp & isnt afraid to hit the ball, whilst our back line was alarmingly woeful for the posh goals.
we lack quality, & its hardly surprising that we are losing games.
well done the fans though for being encouraging & vocal.

Get real you fools. We've dominated the 2nd half, had 2 shots, hit the bar, missed a couple of pull back chances and given them a game. They'll go syraight up. Need to take our chances for sure but you lot are beyond belief. Give it 15 games and see where we are then. It's going to be so funny when we pull it out and win a few on the trot. All I see is the same comments without rationalising or making a true assessment of a game, or indeed making a comment about how / what / why. Absolutely useless. I'll disect the real points of interest after my beer/curry. Make some comment of validity in the interim. Up the U's!

Agree 100% with SuperU's. we're playing well, we're just not getting the breaks. Anyone who blames Dunne/Cowling for that just isnt thinking it through, simple as. I took great encouragement from today's performance, and sooner or later, someone will get a battering. Over the last 3 games we've had 60 odd shots. We're not far off.

We dominated the 2nd half and had 2 shots? Oh well I take it all back then. Keep them two clowns in Dunne & Cowling and lets see where we end up, MY OPINION would be about where we are now....and to give it 15 games and see where we are, well my guess would be bottom of the league unless at least Dunne is removed.

Cowling has been getting ready for League 2 for the last 3 seasons.

All these little 2 and 3 yard passes when we just get into the opposition's half is just a waste of time and is just not incisive enough and allows the defence to sit back and pick off any forward ball. Only when Watt came on did we ever get behind the defence which he did on 3 occasions. Our strike force in the shape of Ibehre and Sears just don't offer enough in the box and basically lack the quality finishing necessary to produce goals. Our defence is very poor and why Clohessy, a so called experienced defender, keeps allowing the winger or wing-back to keep cutting inside him amazes me. Having said that collectively they are not good enough and the times we fail to pick up runners like the guy who scored the third goal today.

It's certainly not looking at all good for us at the moment and maybe, for once, the bookies have got it right.

I hate singling out players but Eastman needs a break from the team. His lack of pace creates the problems in defence.

I actually enjoyed the game today and thought it was a good performance but the same old problems haunt us in every game:

We don't take any of the numerous chances we create.
We keep making the same basic defensive errors

A hugely disappointing game. We took a long time to recover from the early setback of Sammy Szmodics conceding a penalty after four minutes and then we had a great purple patch in the second half after we pulled a goal back at 2-1 but the third for Peterborough killed the game off. We then looked like we had given up and the heads and shoulders had dropped again. We need someone at the helm to fight, be enthusiastic, show sheer determination to succeed despite almost overwhelming odds. We have show at Colchester in the past that we have a will and strong commitment to succeed and have always (in the majority of matches in terms of monetary values of players and pedigrees) been up against it compared to other clubs in this division. However, up until yesterday I had not seen the fight in the team and belief seems to have gone. We showed the old bulldog spirit for a while before we scored the goal and then for a while after but then it all went back to normal and we forgot how to maintain that momentum. I question what actually happens in training. I see the same old methods used week in week out for warm-ups and our style of play is so predictable. We are easy targets for any opposition team. No wonder we are where we are. The league position does not lie. Admittedly, the style of football may, at times be pleasant, but the results are hard to take. Surely anyone can see that ONE point from a possible FIFTEEN is relegation form in any league! Nice football and 'going close' on a number of occasions does not win matches. We need a win DESPERATELY but I cannot see it coming with Mr Dunne in charge with his backroom 'mates'. I think the players have little respect for him and maybe that is why they do not play for him. I once watched Joe D at an under 21s game and witnessed what a hard time he gave one particular player and visibly knocked the confidence out of the player. I wonder if he does that to his more respected and 'senior' players? If so, that could be part of the problem. Maybe the players are frightened to make a mistake. We looked better yesterday but still not anywhere near as good as we should be, certainly not ruthless or clinical enough in front of goal or at defending and communication in defence seems a problem, too. Also, please sort out who should take free kicks and corners without having to waste the time of 4 players deciding! I hate to say it but I think that the time is imminent for Mr Dunne's departure, he is a great guy, club legend, but unfortunately has not cut it at management at this level. Up the U's!!

Sadly my pockets are like yours, not deep enough. I was a part-owner of the club till Mr Cowling forcibly bought out my 25 shares at half their nominal value. Anyway, if I had the millions and I bought CUFC, I would give myself a fortnight to assess Joe Dunne and see if what Ozzie says about his man-management is true. If in that time he won a couple of games, I might give him a stay of execution. I would of course have my new manager lined up and ready to sign before I gave Joe the push.
