Okuonghae is handed the armband

First published in Sport

Magnus Okuonghae is the new U's captain for the 2014/15 season.

New signing, and former Southend United player, Sean Clohessy will be vice-captain.

Okuonghae signed for Colchester United in the summer of 2009 and has been with the club for five years.

This is his second stint as captain as former manager Aidy Boothroyd handed the centre-half the armband during his time as boss.

U's manager Joe Dunne said: "“He’s a big, strong and powerful player who’s been here a long time and he knows the club.

“He’s also got a good relationship with the fans and I think it’s the right time for him.

“He’s been captain before and I think it’s the right time in his career for him to step up and help others, which I think he can do well."

Good choice. Centre backs are often good captains. It's part of their position.

Lets hope it doesn't affect his form like last time he was handed the captains armband.

.I agree Ontheball, he couldn't cut the mustard last time and he makes too many errors himself to gain the respect of the other players. He doesn't have leadership qualities either. I think I would have switched with the Vice captain or possibly chosen Bean.

Agree with all the above in some ways. I was a little surprised because, as referenced above, it did effect him noticeably last time. That said time has passed and he grown more confident.
It makes sense and I'll back the guy 100%

Seems odd as Clohessy was named as Captain at the open day.

As long as Thompson isn't the other member of central defence as Magnus will have enough to deal with without having to try and make up for Joshs continual errors.

I'd have also gone with Bean which makes me think Bean will get very little action this season.

Doesn't matter how bad Magnus plays as Wilson proved last season at times, he will be first one picked in Dunnes starting eleven every game unless injured.
