Darren Ambrose says he would consider a move to Colchester United if an offer came his way.

And the 30-year-old former Ipswich Town favourite says he is already suitably impressed by what he has seen of the U’s.

Ambrose made a surprise appearance for the U’s in their 3-0 pre-season friendly defeat against Ipswich Town, on Wednesday night.

The former Premier League star is currently a free agent having left Birmingham City and had most recently been playing his football in Greece, with Apollon Smyrni.

But the former Newcastle United and Crystal Palace player has recently moved to Thurston, near Bury St Edmunds, with his family.

And Ambrose says he would be happy to talk about a possible permanent deal with the U’s, should he get the chance.

He said: “I spoke to the manager (Joe Dunne) and if he can help me get fit, that’s great.

“If something happens here I’d be delighted but at the moment, I’m just weighing up my options."

Money will always be an issue and I can never see Colchester having enough to match the wage Darren has been used to.

Shame as I think he could bring something to the midfield in strength that we have been lacking in recent seasons.

Let's just hope we have another Dominic Vose on our hands who wants to pull on the blue and white shirt and play every game.

The PFA website is showing over 300 players out of contract and seeking employment. He will have to decide if £x per week now guaranteed for one or two years is preferable to having to wait, for who knows how long, for an offer of £y per week.

It is a good option to wait and see. If reports are true and Ambrose has not done any prep work all summer, then he may struggle initially. Especially with Dunne stating that he wants his whole squad match fit for game one.
At least with him training with us, we get to see if he can do it still at this level or if he is worth the extra money he will demand.
It would be a rolls Royce signing, but only if he fits.

Quality player with plenty of experience would make an ideal skipper for such a young squad. With the squad so small and the likes of Gilbey,Holman and Bean carrying knocks and Watt and Jabo only just returning and not being totally fit we need some more quality.
