Braintree Town won their latest pre-season friendly as League Two side Southend United were beaten 2-1 on a warm day at the Amlin Stadium.

The win followed the Iron's 6-1 defeat by Norwich City in midweek and was another good workout for Alan Devonshire's team.

After most of the first half had been goalless, the hosts took the lead just before the break when triallist Michael Bakare fired home.

The former Chelmsford City striker raced clear of the visitors' defence and confidently lifted the ball over onrushing Shrimpers keeper Daniel Bentley.

However, the lead proved short-lived as Southend were back on level terms just after half-time.

It was Barry Corr who got the equaliser, having got to the ball in the box and nudged it past Iron keeper Nick Hamann.

Having been pegged back, changes were made to the home line-up as Braintree boss Devonshire cast his eye over more trial players,

But that didn't stop them getting a winning goal with 25 minutes left.

It was in slightly controversial circumstances when it did come as Shrimpers left-back Ben Coker maintained he had played the ball in a challenge, but the referee still pointed to the spot.

And Iron skipper Kenny Davis made no mistake in ramming the ball home from the penalty to seal the win.
