Essex County Standard: Dunne happy to make priority signings for U's Dunne happy to make priority signings for U's

Colchester United boss Joe Dunne says it was vital he strengthened the full-back and goalkeeper positions in his squad, following the departure of experienced players this summer.

Skipper Brian Wilson and Ryan Dickson both left for rival League One clubs, while goalkeeper Mark Cousins joined League Two side Dagenham and Redbridge.

Dunne has filled the void left by their departures by signing Sean Clohessy, Ben Gordon and Chris Lewington, all on two-year deals.

Some fans have called for Colchester to sign a new forward to replace Clinton Morrison, who left at the end of last season.

But Dunne insists the trio of players he brought in earlier this week were his top priorities.

He said: “They’re the ones I wanted and that’s what is important.

“We’ve been patient and these positions were important to fill.

“I know there might be talk about other positions being priority.

“But as far as I’m concerned, we’ve lost a left-back, a right-back and a goalkeeper.

“It was very important that we got what we needed and we’ll work on other positions as we go forward."

And scoring goals after a poor return last season isn't a priority?

It's clear to me that by resorting to swearing you are a man of limited talents. The facts are we struggle to score goals on a consistent enough basis which is why we don't attract the crowds. I care about the future of this club even if you don't. If you have a team that can score plenty of goals, even if they don't always win, you will get bigger attendances and then the club can gradually move on from there. This way, by neglecting the department that scores and entertains the fans, as has been the case for the last two seasons, and potentially a third, the club cuts it's nose off to spite it's face in my opinion. Before you levy the argument that the building of a team always starts at the back, I agree, but losing half your defence season after season when contracts are up for renewal isn't the answer either. The cheap option isn't always the best longer term and when all is said and done the club is in the entertainment business, so for heaven sake get on with it.

Looking at the negative ratings for your comments compared to mine - I would say that it is not only me that is fed up with you constant moaning, complaining and knocking the team/club at every possible chance. Why don't you just give it a rest!

There are plenty of variables that effect our goal scoring abilities, to simply state that no addition of a striker = shortage of goals is misguided.

Take for example if we were to sign Clive Platt or any other mediocre striker, would they then be the resolution to our goal problem ?

In my eyes, our problem is not our lack of resources but the way in which they are applied, often our attacking options do not get into the box, and our killer balls in the final third need to be better.

This is something i am hoping will be addressed in pre season although i think it also relies on confidence and trust.

In case you didnt see this last time Baz, i've decided to repost, What are your thoughts ?

I agree to a large extent with your comments but in general terms our finishing is extremely poor. Sears scores a few good goals now and again but is not consistent. Jabo more often than not can't hit a barn door with a banjo, although he is a superb leader of the line. Also what happens if Ibehre gets crocked? He's getting no younger and seems to have a recurring hip problem. Bonne is not the same sort of player although he does have a knack of scoring goals. However, he is still very young and it would be wrong to expect too much from him as yet. Watt and Massey can score goals but are both very inconsistent and Vose has yet to hit the goal trail. We must improve our poor record of 1.15 goals a game to nearer 1.5.

Finishing isn't one of Jabo's best assets and i certainly agree he leads the line tremendously. I think Dunne will most likely bring in a 'big man' on loan if Jabo gets injured for the long haul, which is less than ideal but all our small transfer budget will allow. Bonne will feature more this season and hopefully integrate into the squad so that over time we can look on him to provide us with more and more goals.

I think the way Dunne sets up the squad allows for a greater capacity of goals across the park. Personally i would like to see a few more goals from set pieces, along with an improved goal count from the wide men.(wright, massey, watt, vose) As i said previously, i think this can come from improved distribution in the final third and greater anticipation from a lot of the players.

I think goal count for us will come as a team effort, and so its not just the strikers we will rely on.
